Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
Aug. 30 — Pat Gaines of Ripley was the top performer at the Obion County Fair’s mini-marathon. Gaines, who participated in the 17-24 age group, ran the women’s course in 18:12. On the men’s side, UT Martin instructor Phil Davis set the mark to beat with a time of 23:07 on the male’s course.
Sept. 2 — Union City got its first District 13AA football triumph of the season following a 21-7 bettering of Westview. The Tornadoes were led by Billy Wilkins during the victory with the standout running back crossing the goal line on runs of 55 and seven yards. Meanwhile, Mark O’Steen had one touchdown carry from six yards out. Clint Wilson booted three point-after kicks for the Twisters, who held the Chargers to a lowly 63 yards offense during the game.
Aug. 30 — Union City High School golfer Rodney Speed recorded a hole-in-one during a practice round at Poplar Meadows Country Club. Speed, a junior at UCHS, bottomed his ace on the course’s par-3, 172-yard No. 3 using a 3-iron. Witnesses to the shot were his Tornado golf teammates Spencer Cultra and Joe David Hamblen.
Aug. 31 — Lake Road shellacked Hickman 36-14 in its jayvee opener. Chucky Darnell took in two scores with one from 50 yards out and the other from 30 away. Meanwhile, Tim Travis sprinted 60 yards to paydirt for LR and Ronnie Siglow was able to reel in a 60-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Capping the scoring for the Generals was Scott Prather, who took in a quarterback sneak during the fourth quarter.
Aug. 31 — South Fulton bettered Ballard Memorial 26-14 in prep football action. B.J. Gordon took in the Devils’ first score — a one-yard carry — with Nick Frazier able to take back an interception 45 yards to paydirt. Meanwhile, running back Dee Brown broke free for a 72-yard touchdown sprint, while quarterback Charlie Wieber bounced in from 11 yards out. Overall, SF bettered the Bombers 362-180 in total offense. The score was made closer by four Red Devil turnovers.
Sept. 2 — The South Fulton girls’ golf team came out on top in a four-way scramble at the Weakley County Country Club in Sharon. The Devilettes’ final tally of 82 bettered Westview (85), Huntingdon (108) and Bradford (124). Kelly Wren and Natalie Stokes tied for the best individual score among SF players with both shooting a 42 during the triumph on the links.

Jake Quinn powered the home team’s effort with 116 yards rushing and a touchdown with Tanner Miller reaching the end zone twice on respective carries of 28 and six yards. Defensively, Miller was a force with seven tackles. Meanwhile, Christopher Douglas had six takedowns for BO.
Sept. 3 — Daeron Williams rushed for an astounding 305 yards and five touchdowns on a dozen carries as the talented running back led Fulton City to a 40-0 blanking of South Fulton.
